How does a speaker cleaning sound work?

A phone speaker is a thin membrane that moves back and forth to make sound. When water sits in the grille in front of it, the drops dampen that movement and everything sounds muffled, as if the phone were talking under water.

Low frequencies around 165 Hz make the membrane travel much further than voices or music do. The air it pushes through the grille breaks the surface tension that holds the drops, and they come out. Apple Watch uses the same principle for its Water Lock.

Gigi does not play one fixed note. The Water mode sweeps between 150 and 220 Hz, because every speaker and grille reacts a little differently, and adds short pulses that work like little shoves.

Which mode should you use?

Each mode is a different sound program. Start with the one that matches what happened to your phone.

  • Water: after rain, a splash, the shower or the pool. 60 seconds.
  • Dust: when the sound is crackly, thin or quieter than before. 45 seconds of short vibration bursts.
  • Deep clean: Water then Dust, back to back, about 2 minutes. Good after the beach.
  • Tone: a manual frequency generator to test or tune.
  • Test: check the left and right speakers and the bass.

What a speaker cleaner cannot fix

Sound moves water and loose dust. It does not repair a torn membrane, corrosion, a loose connector or a software bug. Stop and go to a repair shop if you notice one of these:

  • No sound at all, even after restarting the phone
  • Crackling that is there at every volume, even very low
  • A phone that stayed under water for a long time, especially sea water
  • A drink other than water: tea, soda and juice leave sticky residue

Works on iPhone, Samsung, Xiaomi and any phone with a browser

The cleaner uses the Web Audio API built into Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Samsung Internet and Edge. There is nothing to install and nothing is uploaded. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working offline.

It is tuned for phone speakers: iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Redmi, Realme, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, Motorola, Infinix, Tecno. You can also use it on a laptop or a Bluetooth speaker, at a moderate volume.

Questions people ask

Does a speaker cleaner really work?

Yes, for water and loose dust in the grille. The low tone moves the membrane hard enough to push drops out, which is why the sound usually comes back clearer after one or two runs. It will not fix hardware damage.

What is the best frequency to eject water from a speaker?

Around 165 Hz is the usual reference. Gigi sweeps from 150 to 220 Hz because no single frequency works best on every phone.

How long should I run the speaker cleaner?

One Water cycle lasts 60 seconds. Run it 2 or 3 times with short breaks. If nothing changes after 5 runs, the problem is probably not water.

Can the sound damage my speaker?

The cleaning modes use low sine tones that phone speakers handle well, in short cycles. Avoid playing the tone generator at full volume for minutes, especially with a square wave.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. Switch off Silent mode first (ring switch or Action button), because iOS mutes browser sound when the phone is silenced. Then press Start in Safari or Chrome.

Can I clean AirPods or earbuds with it?

Never with the earbuds in your ears. You can lay them next to the phone at half volume, but their mesh is so fine that drying them in open air for a few hours works better.

Should I put my wet phone in rice?

No. Rice does not dry the inside faster than open air and it leaves starch and dust in the ports. Wipe the phone, run the cleaner, then leave it in a dry, ventilated spot.

Is the speaker cleaner free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, with no signup and no app. The ads on the page pay for the site.
