Useful frequencies

  • 165 Hz: the classic speaker cleaning tone
  • 440 Hz: A4, the standard tuning note
  • 50 / 60 Hz: mains hum, to track down a ground loop
  • 1 kHz: reference tone for audio levels
  • 8 to 17 kHz: hearing test range

Sine, square, triangle or sawtooth?

A sine wave is one pure frequency. Square and sawtooth waves add strong harmonics: they sound buzzy and louder at the same volume, so turn the volume down before you switch. Triangle sits in between.

Questions people ask

What frequency gets water out of a speaker?

Between 150 and 250 Hz. Use Water mode for an automatic sweep with pulses, or set 165 Hz here with a sine wave.

Is it safe for my ears?

Keep the volume moderate, and avoid headphones at high volume above 8 kHz. Stop if it feels uncomfortable.

Why do some frequencies sound louder?

Ears are most sensitive between 2 and 5 kHz, and every speaker has its own response. The same volume can sound very different.
