A muffled speaker almost always has a simple cause. Go through this list in order: the first items are the most common and the quickest to check.

1. Water in the grille

If the phone got wet recently (rain, shower, sink, pool), this is your answer. Voices sound like they come from under water, and the sound is quieter than usual.

Fix: run the Water mode of the speaker cleaner two or three times, speaker facing down. See the full guide on getting water out of a phone speaker.

2. Dust and lint

Pockets and bags are full of lint. Over months it builds up in the speaker mesh, especially on phones carried without a case.

Fix: run the Dust mode above. Its short bursts shake loose particles out of the mesh. Then brush the grille gently with a dry, soft toothbrush, holding the phone speaker-down. No pins, no needles.

3. The case or a screen protector

Some cases have holes that do not quite line up with the speaker. Thick screen protectors can cover the earpiece.

Fix: take the case off and play a song. If it sounds better, the case is the problem.

4. Your hand

It sounds silly, but holding a phone sideways to watch a video often puts a palm right over the bottom speaker.

Fix: check where the speaker holes are and hold the phone differently.

5. Sound settings

  • Bluetooth: the phone may still be sending sound to earbuds or a car.
  • Mono audio or balance: in the accessibility settings, a balance pushed to one side makes one speaker much quieter.
  • Equaliser or “sound effects”: a bad preset can make everything dull.
  • Volume limits: some phones cap the media volume in a battery or headphone safety setting.

Fix: switch Bluetooth off, reset the balance to the middle, turn off equalisers and test again. The Test mode above plays left and right separately so you can compare.

6. A software glitch

An app can hold on to the audio and make everything sound wrong.

Fix: restart the phone. If the problem appeared right after an update, check for a newer one.

7. Hardware damage

If none of the above helps, the membrane may be torn or the speaker connection loose, often after a fall or a long dunk.

Signs: crackling at every volume, no sound at all, or a buzz at one precise pitch. The Full sweep in the speaker test helps spot it. A speaker replacement is one of the cheapest repairs on most phones.

Quick checklist

  1. Recent water? Run Water mode.
  2. Old phone, no case? Run Dust mode and brush the grille.
  3. Case off, hand away, Bluetooth off.
  4. Balance in the middle, effects off.
  5. Restart.
  6. Still bad: repair shop.

Questions people ask

Why does my phone sound muffled on calls only?

Calls use the earpiece at the top, not the loudspeaker at the bottom. Clean the earpiece grille, check the screen protector does not cover it, and try a call on speakerphone to compare.

Can dust really make a speaker quieter?

Yes. Lint and fine dust clog the mesh in front of the speaker, a bit like a hand over a mouth. The sound gets quieter and loses its highs.

My speaker crackles. Is it broken?

If it crackles only at high volume, it may be dust or a loose case. If it crackles at every volume, even very low, the membrane is probably damaged.
